Coming off a successful summer, the newly-created Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes have begun practices with increased numbers and enthusiasm as they prepare for their upcoming season-opener at Heron Lake Memorial’s Field on Thursday evening, August 30.
In their first-year of pairing — merging the former Heron Lake-Okabena Wildcats with the Fulda Raiders — the Coyotes will host traditional rival Westbrook-Walnut Grove in a South District Nine-Man game, beginning at 7 p.m.
With the pairing, an obvious increase in numbers should be a huge boost for the new program.
“We are really excited to start the season,” declared Bourquin. “The numbers are good. We have enough kids, maybe as many as 38, in grades 9-12 who will compete for positions and work hard to earn their playing time. We had several guys do very well at a recent team camp at Morris.”
Three of the team’s first four games are at home with the second game (September 7 vs. Red Rock Central) being at Fulda and the fourth contest (September 21 vs. Renville County West) at Heron Lake for HL-O’s Homecoming. Fulda will host its Homecoming on October 5 when the Coyotes tangle with Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.
Away games are at Cedar Mountain / Comfrey (Cedar Mountain, September 14), Hills-Beaver Creek (Hills, September 28), MACCRAY (Raymond, October 12) and Mountain Lake (October 17).
