Editor’s Note: Recently,  former Fulda resident, Reid Knorr, contacted the Fulda Free Press to ask if he could write an article that might encourage other people to become pilots. In the following story, he shares his journey to achieve that goal.

I graduated from Fulda High School in 2009 and I knew pretty early on that being a pilot was what I wanted to do. In high school I discovered aviation and was fortunate enough to take my first airplane ride with my good friend Tony and his dad Marc. I was instantly hooked. At that point I started doing research on the long term viability of a career as a pilot, and I wanted to know what kind of opportunities were available. The more I read and researched the more I started to paint the dream and vision towards what was possible.

After graduating high school I selected Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, IA to complete my flight training. The program is setup to take a student pilot with no flight time to a commercially licensed pilot in 2 years. It’s a very in-depth and fast paced training curriculum that many bigger schools with a similar program spread out over the span of 4 years. The training can be very challenging at times, rewarding during others, and above all you find yourself constantly learning.
