An impressive third-place individual finish by junior Rachel Salentiny was the highlight for the Heron Lake-Okabena girls in the huge 12-team Wolverine Invitational high school cross country meet at the Mountain Lake Golf Course last Wednesday, August 31.
Salentiny ran up among the leaders from start to finish and completed the challenging 5,000-meter (3.1 miles) course in a stellar early-season time of 20:31.
“Rachel ran a tremendous race,” declared HL-O head cross country coach Les Knutson. “She certainly started her season off in grand fashion.”
Fairmont senior Jenna Pavich won the 87-runner varsity event with a time of 20:15 and Fulda eighth-grader Morgan Gehl (running for the combination of Murray County Central and Fulda) held off Salentiny for second, covering the distance in 20:29.
Jackson County Central junior Jessica Christoffer, who ran with Gehl and Salentiny for much of the distance, finished fourth with a time of 20:55.
